Conversations that expand you.

Origin

The Inky Comet first came into orbit in 2016, born out of the desire to bring light to the experiences of everyday Black people. This podcast illuminates the conversations that we often shy away from. The topics that make us uncomfortable in mixed company, but when given sacred space, transform us and make the elephant in the room smaller—creating space for shared empathy, understanding, and community.

After almost eight years, the light of the comet has evolved. The comet has expanded, focusing on the collective struggle of the human experience. Unearthing all that connects us and dismantling all that causes division.

Tune in for season 8 every Wednesday from May 14 through July anywhere you listen to podcasts.

The Host

Nia was raised in Denver, Colorado, and has strong southern roots. As the youngest of four, she learned at a young age to be proud and find strength in her identity as a daughter of the diaspora. During Sunday dinners at Granny’s house, Nia learned and practiced the skills of debate and dialogue. Her father regularly pushed her and her siblings to share their varying opinions on politics and current events. In the safety of her home, Nia was encouraged to regularly push the envelope in the name of the greater good.

Nia studied Political Science and International Studies at Loyola University Chicago. After completing a master's degree in Special Education at Loyola Marymount University, she planned and facilitated affinity-based leadership development workshops based on the liberatory consciousness framework for a national nonprofit. Nia then transitioned to corporate diversity, equity, and inclusion work for global organizations, helping to transform their cultures and hiring practices.

Her experience living in Denver, Chicago, Oakland, and New York has shaped her view of race relations and the subtle impact of geography on our lived experiences. Nia is passionate about equity and inclusion in her personal and professional life. In her spare time, she enjoys ideating a better world, exercising, reading, playing video games, and spending time with loved ones.
